Ginger, Lemon & Honey Tea To Help You Fall In Love With Your Yoga Practice

April 22, 2014 By Monica Stone 3 Comments

There is nothing more tranquil then waking up before the sunrise and starting my day off with a meditative yoga practice. Even if the practice is an intense one, the environment is absolutely serene. It is completely still and silent, stress has not crept in my mind from my job, and I find that the physical practice paves a smooth path to the spiritual practice.

Practicing at this early hour creates a pattern of stillness in my mind so that I can conquer any obstacle the day has in store for me.

Look! I put myself inside the moon!

Before I started practicing Ashtanga Yoga, I was a big time night owl. I am still a lady of the night by nature, and it is easy for me to fall back into that habit if I let it happen. Of course, the most important thing is to get your practice in when you can, but one of the traditions of being an Ashtanga Yoga teacher and practitioner is an early morning practice. I don’t question it. It’s just the way it is, and I love the simplicity of it.

If you have been practicing or teaching at a Mysore Shala for awhile, the transition is obvious. Most people start off during the night session, and when someone has decided to dedicate themselves to the practice, they start to show up in the mornings. It is pretty fabulous to watch!

You’re going to think I am absolutely nuts, but at one time I was teaching an early morning 6am class, and this meant that I had to get on my mat by 4am to finish my practice. I had to be awake at 3:45 am at the latest! If you think that is crazy, you are right. But, good crazy!

I treat myself to warm ginger, lemon, honey detox tea right after I practice, so it is one of my biggest motivations for getting out of bed and onto the mat. This tea cleanses the liver and sparks digestion, so it is a great way to keep your body hydrated and balanced throughout the day.

Some of the benefits of Ginger Lemon Honey Detox Tea:

  • Ginger: Aids  in digestion, helps prevent colds and flus, keeps normal blood circulation, reduces pain and inflammation, and strengthens immunity.
  • Lemons : helps flush out unwanted materials and stimulates the liver, balances pH Levels, enhances enzyme function, freshens breath, clears skin, and helps fight viral infections
  • Honey: boosts the immune system, reduces the risk of heart disease, is an antiseptic so it helps sooth the stomach, clears your skin, and is good for coughs and sore throats

Ingredients
  1. 1 Tbsp. fresh ginger chopped (no need to peel, but make sure to clean)
  2. 1 Tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  3. 1 Tbsp. honey
Instructions
  1. Put the ginger and water in a tea pot.
  2. Bring to a boil
  3. Turn down the heat and let sit for 3 minutes
  4. Squeeze the lemon juice and the honey in a large mug.
  5. Strain the ginger tea into the mug.
  6. Stir to dissolve
Notes
  1. This is a basic recipe to follow, but I honestly make a full tea pot and might have two cups before I hit the road to work. It is also okay to add water to the fresh ginger if you want another cup that you didn't anticipate for. As you start to get used to making this tea, you might just start to chop up the desired amount of ginger instead of measuring it all out.
  2. I also enjoy adding the lemon rind to the teapot and letting that soak in the water.
  3. Enjoy the yumminess in your mouth and happy detoxing!

I also enjoy adding a flavored tea to change it up! Try one of these favorites from Teavana:

Rooibos Chai Tea

Ginger Coconut Rooibos Tea

Peach Tranquility Herbal Tea

Monkey Picked Oolong Tea

Citrus Lavender Sage Herbal Tea

Body & Mind White Tea

Don’t forget the tea strainer since this is loose tea!

Happy Sipping! Namaste!

Do you have a morning tradition? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

  • Jaime ShearerJaime ShearerYoga Student Since 2012

Monica is dedicated to her own practice and the true path of yoga - the one of personal experience - which makes her an outstanding teacher. She is warm and easy to talk with, and she allows the student to have their own experience on the mat. She explains postures and breath in ways that are understandable so that the student "gets it." She makes yoga real and tangible in ways that truly serve the student. Work with Monica. You'll be glad you did.

have always wanted to try yoga, but was always nervous. Monica took that fear away and made me feel like i was the only one in class with a room full of strangers. She is able to work with multiple students during the same move and still make it a personalized class for one.

Monica is a caring, wise, thoughtful, and talented yoga instructor. She has an in-depth knowledge of the philosophy and spirituality of Ashtanga yoga. My previous yoga experience had mostly just been at my local gym. Luckily, last year I found Monica. She has been guiding my practice at least once a week since then. As a newcomer to Ashtanga yoga, Monica made me feel comfortable and had the patience to teach me the basics. She also encouraged me to start an at home practice so that I was able to obtain a deeper understanding of Ashtanga. Monica is always encouraging and lets me know in subtle ways when she feels that I am ready to move deeper into my practice. I feel that the growth in my practice over the last year has been tremendous. Not only do I notice the change in me but others around me do as well. I am so grateful to have found Monica!

I’ve come across many a yoga instructor over the years, but Monica stands out as genuinely amiable, as she glows with an infectious inner light, and highly devoted to and passionate about her practice. Her dedication to Ashtanga as a lifestyle is very clear, and creates for a contagious motivating force. Every time I’ve practiced with her, she eagerly transmits her devotion and passion of Ashtanga and meditation to everyone in class; she makes the most fledgling beginner feel at home, and simultaneously challenges the more advanced students. While I only practice Ashtanga with her, I know she provides therapeutic yoga sessions as well as meditation. And, if her methods of guiding students out of the Ashtanga vigor into the more meditative savasana are indicative of her meditational techniques, I’d recommend her to anyone
