Waking up to the news of yoga master, B.K.S. Iyengar’s, death is quite surreal. He taught yoga to thousands, was loved my thousands, and you might know him from his ” Light On” books (See below).
It’s interesting that I’ve never practiced Iyengar style yoga. Here in Orlando, there aren’t any studios that offer it. Strange with Orlando being a pretty decent sized city!
My first introduction to learning about Iyengar was during my Yoga Apprenticeship. His Guru was Krishnamacharya, who was also the Guru to Pattabhi Jois. We had to read an article called, 3 Gurus, 48 Questions. This article was an interview with Iyengar, Jois, and Desikachar since they all studied under Krishnamacharya. What was interesting about it was how they all studied under this one Guru, but developed different (although similar) yoga teaching and practice styles, yet the foundation of the teaching remains the same. It remains one of my favorite articles and I revisit often.
To honor his life and remember him today, I’m going to reproduce that for you right here:

A Few Books by B.K.S. Iyengar:
Light On Yoga
Light on Prananyama
And many of his other books here
As I finish my coffee this Wednesday morning, and make my way to the shala to begin my yoga practice, I contemplate on the present moment, how blessed I am to be able to share part of a lifetime with this lovely soul, and wish him a beautiful journey into enlightenment, whatever and whenever that may be.
Today I dedicate my practice to you, Mr. Iyengar.
Namaste
